Panama Canal
17th January 2014 – Panama Canal Day. Today we crossed from the Atlantic to the Pacific in 48 miles, 26m up and down and six locks.
The ships pulled through the lock by electric “donkeys” on a rack and pinion track.
28,000 people lost their lives digging the Panama Canal by the time it opened in 1914 having been started by the French in 1880 and finished by the United States. At present they are installing new locks which will be 55m wide instead of the current 32.3m
As you leave there is a great view of the modern Panama City
